When people ask the name of
my restaurant, they are usually perplexed by the name and how to pronounce it,
Tarahumara (taura-oo-maw-rah). I can see the confusion in their eyes, like
someone has just shared an oddly disturbing deep dark secret about themselves.
Then, of course, the big question that always follows after, “Why?” This post
is going to answer that very question.

The Tarahumara is an ancient
tribe of Indians that live in the Copper Canyons of the Sierra Madre in Mexico.
They are notorious for their culture built around running and have been featured
on programs such as Discovery Channel and National Geographic, and made famous
in the bestselling book, “Born To Run” by Christopher McDougall. They are also
known as the “Raramuri”, which means “the running people” or “one who walks
well”. They run because it is their only means of transportation and they run a
lot because they live so far from one another. Running is not only
transportation, but also their way of having fun. What football is to America
is what running to the Tarahumara, so they have races and games that
incorporate running as well. Running is what brings them all together as a
community and keeps them healthy. In America, unfortunately, there is an
obesity problem along with a wide variety of other diet and lifestyle related
diseases such as heart disease, osteoporosis, and cancer that are wreaking
havoc on the population. Diseases such as those mentioned before are unheard of
in the Tarahumara culture, and we feel it is due to their enjoyment in
part-taking in running and community mentality. Our guess is that the
Raramuri’s way of living will help treat, and prevent those horrible diseases
from striking another fellow American tribe-member and that is why we have
chosen to name our restaurant after the great Tarahumara.
